Dear Parents and Families,
I hope you are having a great day! Before on-line registration opens on Thursday, July 25th and our walk-in registration on Wednesday, July 31st, I wanted to just send out a couple of clarifications to make the process easier. Teacher assignments for all registered students grades 1-6 will be available through SIS on August 1st. When you go into SIS to view the class assignment, you will need to click on the “Scheduling” button half way down on the right hand side. The class assignment will not show up on your student’s profile page. Teacher assignments for kindergarten students will be available on Thursday, August 8th. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the office. Thank you!!

Dear Parents,
We have had some events rescheduled for different times. I wanted to make you aware of them. They are as follows:
6th Grade graduation has been changed to May 23rd at 9:30 am. The 6th grade celebration will still be on May 22nd at 2:00, but because of Springville High School’s graduation and other factors the graduation has been rescheduled.
The 3rd grade track meet has been rescheduled for Monday, May 13th because of the expected bad weather.
Please let me know if you have any questions about these events. Thank you!
Also, our 2nd grade classes are doing a “Loose Change for Food” service project next week, May 13th through the 17th. The 2nd grade core curriculum asks students to identify and participate in a local civic activity. Last year they collected over $655.00 and donated it to the food shelter. If you have any questions, please contact Becky Jorgensen, Dustin Anderson, or Darla Stapel. Thank you!
Have a great day,

Dear Parents,
2018-19 yearbooks are on sale! The cost is $15.00 for 48 full color pages filled with school memories. You can pay with cash, check, or Venmo. Please make checks payable to "Brookside PTA". Venmo is BrooksidePTA. Please write "yearbook", your student's name, and your student's teacher's name on the memo line. Thank you to our PTA for providing this service for our school and making yearbooks possible.
Here is a message from our PTA President, Karmen Diaz --
We wanted to thank everyone for supporting our Tiger Runathon Fundraiser this year! We truly have the best parents, students, teachers and staff at Brookside Elementary. The kids had a great time AND our fundraiser was a great success. We didn't make our goal but we did make $7500.
That is such a blessing for the PTA and will help fund lots of fun and much needed things for the school next year as well as paying for some of the items approved by the general membership. We know we could never do any of it without each and every one of you!
THANK YOU! Have a wonderful day,

December 4, 2018
Happy Monday, everyone! Here are just a few reminders for this week:
Wednesday is our PTA meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at 10:00 in the Tiger’s Den.
Our Christmas Choir Concert is Friday at 4:00 for our 4th-6th grade choir. They have been practicing and have prepared some fun songs to share.
On Friday, we will be having a lockdown drill at 9:15. This drill will help us practice what to do in case we ever have an intruder inside the school. I will go over the procedure during the morning announcements and help the students understand that it is just a drill and that they are safe. Teachers will do the same during the drill so students can remain calm and reassured.
Students must be checked out and dismissed from office when they leave school early. Therefore, we are asking parents to wait in the office when they come to check their students out of school. The secretaries will call down to the students’ class and have them come to the office. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe by following this policy.
Also, please make every effort to have your students here at school. We understand that there are illnesses and other circumstances that may keep a student from attending school, but hopefully those circumstances will be rare. We are happy to help students get caught up when such circumstances arise, but it is difficult when there are excessive absences. Teachers come prepared to teach curriculum standards and concepts and it is difficult when students are not here to receive the instruction. Thank you for all you do to support your students and their education.
Thank you and have a great week. Dana Beckert
October 8, 2018

Dear Parents,
Thank you to everyone that helped with the School Board Presentation last night. The student choir did a fabulous job! It was a great celebration of the wonderful things happening at Brookside.
Here are just a couple of reminders for the upcoming week:
School pictures are tomorrow, Friday September 14th. We appreciate the PTA’s help getting the students ready and lined up.
Monday, September 17th, is a district development day. Students will be dismissed at noon and there will be no afternoon kindergarten. Please contact the office if you have any questions. Thank you!
If you need to get a message to your student at the end of the day, please call before 3:00 pm. We are getting an over abundance of calls the last 10 minutes of the day and it is difficult to communicate so many messages to the students. We will do the best we can, but we can’t guarantee the message will get to your student if you call after 3:00. Thank you for helping us with this situation.
Thanks again for all your support!

Dear Parents,
We are at the close of another wonderful school week. Students have been working diligently learning procedures, expectations, and new curriculum. I am so proud of their perseverance and hard work. Here are just a few reminders as we head into next week:
The PTA is selling spirit t-shirts. I have attached the information to this email. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt, you can send the money with your student to the office and we will make sure it gets to the PTA.
Thank you to the students who are singing in the choir performing at the school board meeting on Wednesday. Mrs. Evans sent home information about the performance after their Wednesday practice on the 5th. If your student is a member of that choir and you have any questions, please contact the office. Thank you!
Students are welcome to come to school each day after 8:15 am. We have had students arriving earlier and we cannot provide supervision for them. At 8:15, they are welcome to go into the computer lab and work on schoolwork or they can sit quietly in the foyer. At 8:30 they will be allowed to head to their classrooms and to eat breakfast. Thank you for your help.
Next Friday is our picture day. Students brought home the picture information this week in preparation for their pictures on Friday. If you have any questions, please contact the office.
August 28th Message
Dear Parents,
We are off to a great start for a wonderful school year. We bagan by welcoming the students back to school with a red carpet, balloons, and excitement. Thank you to everyone who helped provide this lively welcome.
Here are a few items of business as we begin our second week:
On September 12th, Brookside students have the opportunity to perform at the Nebo School District Board Meeting. Tami Evans has volunteered to put a choir together for that performance. They will practice each Wednesday afternoon until the performance date. This choir is for 4th through 6th grade students but 2nd and 3rd grade students are invited to join as well if they have an older sibling participating in the choir. We appreciate Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Gallagher for helping with this event and we appreciate your support.
This Friday at 2:45 pm we will be having our first fire drill of the year. I know this can be a frightening experience for our younger students so I wanted to make you aware of the drill in case you wanted to talk to your student prior to the drill. The office staff and teachers will help students understand that it is just a drill and that everything is OK. More information about our emergency drills can be found on the school’s web page in the parent handbook. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Be watching for September’s Parent Newsletter. I will be sending it out toward the end of this week.
Have a wonderful evening and, again, thank you for all your support!

Dear Parents Happy Monday!
Here is just a reminder from our current PTA President:
As the school year comes to a close, I would like to thank parents for all of the support that has been provided to the PTA. Many of you know that I have served as President for two years, and as per PTA bylaws, my board is unable to serve another term. We need to turn over the reins to a new board. PTA does so many wonderful things for Brookside Elementary, such as:
Providing School T Shirts, Reflections, No Screen Week, SEP Dinners for Teachers,Red Ribbon Week,Year Books,Book Fair,Dad’s and Donuts, And more!!!
These awesome programs and activities happen BECAUSE of PTA. They enrich your student’s experience at Brookside, and they also offer support to Teachers and Staff.
As President, I have been unable to fill my position for the upcoming 2018-19 school year. Most programs and activities have chair people who will run them next year, but we still need a President (or Co -Presidents)who can step in and make sure these activities happen for our students.
If you have been thinking of volunteering, NOW IS THE TIME! PTA is a very rewarding volunteer experience. I have loved every minute of my time as President.
Please contact me if you are interested in serving on the PTA board for next year. I would hate for our children to miss out on all of the many things that PTA has to offer!
rachel.orme [at] gmail.com, brooksidepta.president [at] gmail.com 801-427-3980
Also, just a reminder about next year’s class request information:
Regarding requests and special considerations for the next school year, I ask that parents who would like to share a request or other information with me regarding their child’s class placement, to please come to the school’s front office during the request window of May 14-25 to receive and fill out a request form. Forms will include specific guidelines regarding the request process. In order for a request to be accepted, it must be completed according to the guidelines, have a secretary’s signature approving the form, and must be received by a member of our office staff during the request window (May 14-25). Forms will not be sent home. I will consider the gathered information along with other academic and school information as I work to create classes that are balanced according to range of student ability, behaviors, gender, and the number of students. If you have any questions, please visit with me or a member of the school’s office staff.
Thank you! Dana Beckert
April 30, 2018

January 29, 2018
Dear Parents,
At this time of year, we see an increase in student absences. As a school, we support your decision concerning sending your child to school or not. If your child is sick and contagious, we would encourage you to keep him/her home to accelerate the healing process and get better.
That being said, attendance at school is critical to academic progress. If your child is not sick or contagious, please make an effort to help him/her get to school on time. Our teachers are prepared each day to provide quality learning activities for students. Without your child’s attendance, he/she will miss out on those lessons and activities causing them to fall behind academically. They are missed when they are not here.
Student success is a team effort between home and school. Thank you for your help concerning this matter.
Have a great week, Dana Beckert
January 22, 2018
Dear Parents,
This week we are excited about having the district dance specialist, Melanie Fillmore, here to work with our teachers and students. This will be our third experience this year working with her and we are excited to have her back. Previously, she has worked with 3rd-6th graders and this experience will include 1st and 2nd grades. She will be training and teaching our teachers ways to integrate arts instruction, specifically dance, into other content areas as well as helping teachers know how to teach the specific Utah core fine arts curriculum.
Experiencing the fine arts is part of a well-rounded and complete education. We are proud to be a part of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program which provides arts-integrated instruction to elementary students. We have wonderful teachers who strive each day to provide fine arts experiences for our students.
Have a great week, Dana Beckert

It seems like December is in full swing. Here are just a couple of reminders:
The 4th-6th grade choir concert will be this Wednesday, December 6th at 4:00 pm.

Dear Parents,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday full of family and good food!
With the holiday season upon us, I just wanted to remind you about the Amazon Smile program where you can sign up and Brookside receives a small portion of your purchase price as cashback for our PTA. The link to sign up is https://smile.amazon.com/ch/87-0451045 or you can find it on the PTA’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/springvillebrooksidepta/ . It’s still your same Amazon account but you have to make sure you go to the Amazon Smile page for it to work. Thank you -- every little bit helps!
I also wanted to let you know that starting today during lunch we have asked students to put any uneaten, unopened food items from their school lunch (applesauce, bananas, fruit cups, milk, etc.) on the “sharing table”. If other students would like an extra milk, for example, they are welcome to get one off the sharing table at no additional cost. We are hoping this helps cut down on the food wasted each day at lunch time. Students are also welcome to stop in at the office after school and get any leftover food items to take home.
Thank you and have a great week!

Dear Parents,
First of all, I want to thank the PTA and all the volunteers who helped at our book fair last week. It was a great success because of the dedication and hard work of so many who helped.
This week as we take time to reflect on what we are thankful for, I too, would like to take this opportunity to give thanks. I am grateful to be the principal at Brookside Elementary and work alongside some of the very best students, families, and staff in the state.
I am thankful for students who come to school each day ready to learn and do their best. I am so proud of them! They struggle through challenges and experience success as they put forth their best efforts. I am thankful for the enthusiasm and support of families and parents in creating an outstanding partnership for our students. I am also thankful for our teachers and support staff who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of the students at heart. They constantly challenge their students and themselves to reach higher, and accomplish more. Thank you!
I would like to wish all of you and your families a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!
Thanks again, Dana Beckert

Dear Parents,
It is Book Fair week! I always look forward to the Book Fair. Students are so excited to shop for affordable books, fun posters, and other educational products. I love it when students stop me in the hall to show me the book they got at the Book Fair. The Book Fair is open everyday this week from 8:30-3:30 and is located on the stage. It is a perfect time for you to come and do some early Christmas shopping. Thank you to our PTA for helping us bring the Book Fair to Brookside.
Reading to your children is so important as explained in this quote from the Washington Post article, “Why It’s Important to Read Aloud to Your Kids and How to Make It Count”. Amy Joyce wrote, “One of the most important things parents can do, beyond keeping kids healthy and safe, is to read with them. That means starting when they are newborns and not even able to talk, and continuing well beyond the years that they can read by themselves. Study after study shows that early reading with children helps them learn to speak, interact, bond with parents and read early themselves, and reading with kids who already know how to read helps them feel close to caretakers, understand the world around them and be empathetic citizens of the world.”
Thank you! Have a great week! Dana Beckert

Dear Parents,
I hope your week is off to a great start!
Nebo School District is seeking public input regarding facility priorities in preparation for a Bond Election to be held next year in November 2018. Please go to the Nebo District homepage and click on “Survey: Nebo School District Seeks Public Input”. There is a brief video available explaining the Bond and a short survey to take.
Also, I wanted to inform parents about a kindergarten readiness program that is available. UPSTART is a free, technology-delivered kindergarten readiness program that will give your child a fun start in reading, math, and science (with a focus on reading) in just 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. To get more information on this program, go to the Nebo District homepage. We also have fliers available at the school in the front office.
Please watch for an email with the October Parent newsletter attached.
Thank you, Dana Beckert

Dear Parents,
This week is “No Screen Week”. Please be watching for information coming home from the PTA. They will be sending home a sheet listing some ideas that will help students decrease their screen time this week. Thanks to our PTA for their support and activities!
We will be starting an after school choir, hopefully in October. However, we are in need of a piano player. If you, or anyone you know, (it could even be a student) would be willing to play for our choir, please let me know. We will begin with an upper grade choir and then offer the opportunity to the lower grades in the winter. Thank you for your help!
Our students have been fortunate this week to participate in the district program GAINS, Growing Arts In Nebo School District. Grades 3-6 have had the opportunity to work with our district dance specialist, Melanie Fillmore. Some of the classes worked with her last week and others will have the opportunity this coming Tuesday. Teachers are receiving training and coaching experiences so they can more effectively teach the pure art of dance, as well and integrate dance into other subject areas.
PTA Reflection projects are due this Friday, September 29th. Students can bring in their entries anytime this week. Thank you!
October 2nd is Brookside night at the Sonic in Spanish Fork! A portion of all the sales will go to the school. Please come and join us for dinner from 5:00-8:00 pm. There will be activities and games for a fun night out with the family.
Just as a reminder, as the weather becomes cooler, please make sure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather of the day. We appreciate your help and support. Thank you!

Dear Parents,
We are excited to announce our box top week has started! Please collect box tops and send them with your students. The PTA is sponsoring a competition this week – the class that brings in the most box tops will receive a reward. The box tops program is a great way for the PTA to earn extra money that will directly affect our students.
Also, the PTA has extra school t-shirts. If you would like a school shirt please contact our PTA president, Rachel Orme, or talk to the secretaries in the office. Each Friday is spirit day and it is fun to see everyone in their Brookside t-shirt.
6th grade orchestra started this week but it is NOT too late to join. If your 6th grader would like to participate, come into the school office and sign up. Please feel free to come to orchestra on Monday morning at 8:00 in room 19. If you don’t know what instrument you want to play, you can try some out and decide.
Looking forward, next week is no screen week. During this week, students are encouraged to decrease their screen time and increase other fun and creative activities in their free time. There will be more information coming next Monday!

Dear Parents,
This week as I met with the PTA, I was reminded of the outstanding parents we have here at Brookside. Thank you for the work you do each day to support your students’ learning. Helping students achieve and progress is a team effort and we appreciate your support and dedication.
Next week, September 18-22, is Box Top week. Please clip and save your box tops and send them with your student during this week. Every box top helps in raising needed funds for our students.
If you happened to come into the school today, you noticed that staff members are wearing Nebo Hero shirts. It is so wonderful to be part of Nebo School District and work with heroes every day. Nebo School District is 4,000 staff members strong, each a hero and committed educators; heroes who are at their best when it matters the most.
Today we are also celebrating Patriot Day. We honor those whose lives were taken on September 11, 2001. We also honor and celebrate those heroes; first responders, national service members and citizens alike, who so nobly aided their fellow citizens during America’s time of need.
Upcoming events this week:

Dear Parents,
It has been a wonderful beginning to the new school year. Thank you to those who were able to attend the Brookside’s Open House on Monday afternoon. There is always so much excitement in the air as teachers and students meet each other and relationships are formed.
On the first day of school, the student body came together for an opening assembly. We recognized students and teachers who were new to Brookside. We also introduced this year’s theme, “BEE a Leader”. Students will learn about a specific leadership skill each month. We will recognize those students who put the skills into practice and they lead out at school.
Planning time, specialty classes also began this week. We welcome two new specialty teachers so our staff:
P.E. – Heather Child (new)
Library – Trisha Olsen (new)
Fine Arts – Jill Tolley
Computers – Becky Williamson
This week we welcome our kindergarteners to school on the 29th! We are excited to have them and I look forward to getting to know them. Our kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Gallagher and Mrs. Broussard, are ready for a great year!
Thank you!
