Last week, the fifth grade was able to attend an assembly put on by Discovery Gateway called Reaction Time.  In this assembly, Mr. Phill Evans taught the students about chemical and physical changes.  He showed some really cool demostrations to demostrate chemical reactions.  Then, the student were able to participate in a lab where they got to try their hand at some chemical reactions.  It was a fun way to review out Science unit on matter.

Not pictures: Azariah Sroufe and Deagan Rosenloff

To go along with our dress up week, we had a couple of competitions runnings.  The first took place in library and was called the Math with the Lorax competition.  There was a large jar of gumballs in the library and each student got to guess how many gumballs were in the jar.  The number of gumballs in the jar was… 495!

The closest guess and the first place winner is:  Azariah Sroufe in Mrs. Haines 5th Grade class. She guessed 499 gumballs.

There were 5 students who tied for second place. They all guessed 500 gumballs.  The second place winners are…Rhett Morrison in Mrs. Smith’s 5th Grade class, Riker Zufelt in Mrs Graves 4th grade class, Kate Neth in Mrs. Graves 4th grade class, Deagan Rosenlof in Miss Bradford’s 3rd Grade class, and Taylor Mcferson in Mrs. Stapel’s 2nd Grade class.  Congrats to all the winners

The second competition was a bookmark design contest.  The students were all given a template to create a bookmark.  With so many amazing entries, the student counsel decided to pick a design from each grade.  The winnesr of this competition will get their bookmarks copied and given to each student in their grade.  Great job to every student that entered a bookmark. Here are the winners for the bookmark contest.

Not a Box

Attributions:
Mrs. Erin Willis

In first grade this week we kicked off our inventors and inventions unit in science by designing our own "not a box" inspired by the book Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. In the book a bunny tells the reader the box on the page it not a box then proceeds to show the reader the many things a box can became such as a car, robot, building, and even a mountain. After the story the students had fun planning out their designs and implementing what they had planned. Each student had their own creative idea of what their crayon box would become as they worked on it. I loved seeing all of their boxes! They made a cat, robot, spaceship, present, ice cream cone, instrument, and many other amazing "not a boxes". As we continue on with the unit I am excited to see what the students create for the first grade invention convention!
