Our fourth graders visited Springville Power Plant on a field trip. We were able to tour the plant and learn about electricity and safety.

We toured the engine room and learned about what makes the engines run and kinds of things they do to keep these big engines and generators running. We also toured the control room to see how they keep track of everything.

We learned about electricity. We learned  that electricity is made up of electrons. Our guide demonstrated some experiments and then we got to try them. They tried to put a long metal stick into a tube filled with magnets. They put in thick rubber gloves and tried to connect a nut and bolt. They became kid generators and pedaled a bike to light some light bulbs. And they experimented with static electricity.

Finally, we learned about safety. We were taught about insulators and conductors. We talked about the importance of being safe and what to do if there is a down power line. We got to see a demonstration of what happens if we are not safe. The students loved watching this demonstration.

Thank you Springville Power for having us.
