This will be our last Teacher Tuesday and we are highlighting one of the best! Miss Elizabeth Bowns teaches sixth grade.  This is her second year at Brookside. She is amazing at what she does and we are lucky to have her here.

Favorites:

  • Pizza: Supreme Pizza - She likes everything!
  • book/author: The Kane Chronicles
  • Ice cream: Mint Chocolate Chip
  • Sport: Swimming in the summer, ice skating in the winter
  • Color: Mint Green
  • Snack: Fried Pickles
  • Zoo Animal: Do dolphins count?  Of course they do!
  • Recess game:  Reading under the Slide.  What? We can do that?

What do you love to do on the weekend? Sleep and Mindcraft

Who was your favorite teacher and why? Sharon Bodily. She expected a lot of us and was strict with her rules, but would move heaven and earth to teach us what we needed to do. She actually taught me skills that I would need in real life (such as sticking to a deadline and revising my work until I got it right).

If you were given $1000 - what would you buy? A vacation.

What song would you sing at Karaoke night? The Voyage by Celtic Thunder

Who or what inspires you? My mom.

Dear Parents,

In support of Governor Herbert’s request to “stay home, stay safe” and as a positive example to our students and community, Brookside will be postponing our activity originally planned for Wednesday afternoon until sometime after April 13th. However, we are still planning on having our spirit week.  You can participate by posting pictures on Instagram and tag us @brookside.tigers. You can also email pictures to your teachers and we will get them posted. The themes for each day are in the attached document or you can find the information on the school’s web page.

Thank you so much for understanding!

Dear Parents,

We have almost completed the first two weeks of “at home learning”! Congratulations, everyone!! After one more week we can all enjoy a week off for a well deserved Spring Break! Parents, please know that the teachers understand how difficult this online learning at home can be. They have experienced those struggles, learning curves, and trial and error right along with you. They are having to take a “one size shoe” approach to instruction for households with feet of many sizes. If you want and can do more - virtual field trips, extra lessons, etc . .  - go for it! However, if you are barely hanging on with the demands facing you and your family, please know that we understand. We know that you are doing the very best you can in your new role. Your child’s physical and emotional well being is important as well. Thank you for all you are doing!!! We need to work together during this different and challenging time.

To change things up a little, we are planning a Brookside Spirit Week for next week. You can find the information on our school’s web page.  You can participate by posting pictures on Instagram and tag us @brookside.tigers. You can also email pictures to your teachers and we will get them posted. Thank you!

On Wednesday, April 1st, teachers will be bringing a special note to each of their students between noon and 2 pm. It will be a small sign placed in your front yard. If students would like to wave to their teachers, that would be great! Just remind them that they can’t run out to the teachers or give them a hug. We need to make sure they stay in the house or on the porch. Thank you! The teachers are so excited to see their students!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Like you, we are just learning that Governor Gary R. Herbert, State Superintendent Syd Dickson, and the Utah State Board of Education “announced today that Utah’s K-12 public schools will extend their dismissal [soft closure] through Friday, May 1st.”  Their press release further stated that they will “continue to evaluate the situation to make a determination about the remaining school year” and that:

Gov. Herbert expressed his appreciation to the educators throughout our state who have quickly adapted their instruction to remote learning platforms.

“These are unprecedented times in Utah’s and our nation’s history,” the governor said, “I have been overwhelmed with Utahns’ outpouring of support for one another, and nowhere has this been more evident than in the way our educators are supporting Utah students and families.”

Distance learning will continue during the extended dismissal for all K-12 public schools, where feasible…

“We recognize that being away from school creates additional work and stress for everyone in our communities; however, it is a necessary step in stopping the spread of COVID-19,” said State Superintendent Sydnee Dickson. “During the uncertainties of the coming weeks, it is more important than ever to remain socially connected with our students and families while doing our best to ensure learning continues. The flexibility and initiative of our educators is a shining example of how we rise together in challenging circumstances.”

Meal services at K-12 public schools will also continue on an as-needed basis.

Nebo School District teachers and staff remain committed to providing the learning structure and support that students and parents will require during these challenging times.  Our talented and dedicated professionals are so thankful to you students and parents for your tremendous efforts regarding at-home schooling.  Please remain in communication with your child’s teachers and contact the school with questions and concerns.

We are so grateful to live in amazing communities that rally around each other in difficult circumstances and are proud to be your partners in helping your children have academic and social/emotional success.

Sincerely,

Lana Hiskey

Community Relations Administrator

Dear Parents,

Nebo School District’s Child Nutrition Department has received a fee waiver from the State Board of Education through the USDA. So beginning Thursday, March 19, 2020, from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m., we have been authorized to offer Free Grab-n-Go breakfasts and lunches at Brookside for all children ages 0 - 18, Monday through Friday until further notice.  Children from any school may pick up meals here, but the children must be present to pick up meals and both meals may be picked up at the same time. (Other schools in Springville include Cherry Creek Elementary, Meadow Brook Elementary, Springville Junior High, and Springville High School.)

To accommodate the expected increase of numbers and to keep within the social distancing guidelines, we will be distributing the breakfasts and lunches curbside in front of the school in the student drop-off zone.. As you pull in, we will count the number of children present and give you that many breakfasts and lunches. You will not even have to get out of the car. Please remember that children must be present to get the meals. In addition, you are no longer required to call in and request lunches in the morning. We will just provide for all who come.

Thank you in advance for being  patient as we try to accommodate all the people requesting this service.
