In first grade this week we kicked off our inventors and inventions unit in science by designing our own "not a box" inspired by the book Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. In the book a bunny tells the reader the box on the page it not a box then proceeds to show the reader the many things a box can became such as a car, robot, building, and even a mountain. After the story the students had fun planning out their designs and implementing what they had planned. Each student had their own creative idea of what their crayon box would become as they worked on it. I loved seeing all of their boxes! They made a cat, robot, spaceship, present, ice cream cone, instrument, and many other amazing "not a boxes". As we continue on with the unit I am excited to see what the students create for the first grade invention convention!
