We have been learning about density. First we checked to see what things were more dense than water. We found those things would sink. If things were less dense than water they would float. Next we made density towers with different liquids. The more dense liquids would go to the bottom.

In 5th grade we finished reading the book Wonder as our class read-a-loud. So as a reward we were able to watch the movie. Students brought pillows, blankets and treats to share. It was so fun being able to compare the book to the movie to see all the differences and similarities!

In 5th grade social studies we've been learning about the Revolutionary War. Yesterday we were learning about the Boston Massacre where groups of colonists threw snowballs and rocks at British soldiers. We did a snowball activity where the students answered questions like "what do you do when you're upset" "How do you manage being upset" and "how did people during the revolutionary war manage being upset" and then got to throw their crumpled up paper across the room.
Our student council members attended a leadership conference at BYU on Monday! They listened to some inspiring speakers and learned leadership skills to bring back to Brookside this year. Some of these students’ favorite take-aways were: lead others with your heart and your brain, have a positive attitude, be inclusive, be kind, be more accepting, and have grit!

In fifth grade, we have been learning about the causes of the American Revolution. In Miss Bird’s class, we have had an economy from the beginning of school where the kids have been earning tigers for their weekly pay and doing good work. The past couple of weeks, we have started having taxes and the students are beginning to hate this time. The taxes increase in frequency until they finally just get angry and “rebel” like the colonist did. These taxes are unfair like wearing jeans, blonde hair, having a sister. We also had some fees like a chair fee.
Rhett Morrision, Lydia Kmetzsch, Edie Wilde, Emery Strong, Benjamin Smith and Jessie Peterson were choosen from all the student's who turned in artwork this week, to win a prize for coloring a school lunch week cartoon. Great coloring students!
As part of National School Lunch Week some of the Brookside teacher's signed up to serve lunch to our students. It looks like they are having way too much fun...
Today we had a table contest to practice our division algorithm. The blue table was able to consistently compute the correct answers the fastest with single digit divisors. Next we will try bigger dividends!
