Haunted House Projects

Submitted by susan.bird on

This is a huge project about following detailed verbal directions. The houses start out as paper, are copied onto pieces of card stock, cut out, and then assembled in class. Our haunted house village this year was called Haunted Hills. Then we (Mrs. Bird and myself) spray paint them out behind the school during planning time. After they dry, we have a class party where we decorate them--in record time--while listening to Halloween music.

Second Grade Learns Colors

Submitted by susan.bird on

Second grade students have been learning about colors.  They know that the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue.  They know that you can mix the primary colors and make secondary colors. The secondary colors are orange, green, and purple.  In class all students made a Primary Colors Quilt as well as mixing Play-Doh to make a secondary color wheel. Probably the most fun was learning how to play a Primary Color song and the "C" scale on Glockenspiels.  Come check out our 2nd grade hall to see their artwork.

Fifth Graders Practice Multiplication

Submitted by susan.bird on

Miss Bird’s fifth grade class is working hard to learn the “magic” way to multiply.  In fourth grade the students learn different methods, like partial products and the open area model.  This year the students are learning the standard algorithm and practicing like crazy. These students struggled at first, because they were used to their fourth grade ways, but they picked it up quick and are doing amazing.

Spelling Practice

Ms. White's class is working hard on their spelling.  They love to practice using white board markers on their desks.  They are sorting their words using the vowel combinations o, oa, and ow.  Great job, third graders.

Mr. Bradford Teaches Math

Submitted by susan.bird on

Mr. Todd Bradford visited classes and taught discovery math lessons. In fifth grade, Mr. Bradford explored ways to solve multi-digit multiplication problems.  He guided their thinking toward the "magic" way of the standard algorithm.  The students loved having Mr. Bradford visit.

Brookside Student's Let The Firefighters Know We Care With Letters and Cards

Submitted by liz.porter on

Brookside students have been busy writing sincere letters and notes, drawing pictures and expressing their appreciation for all the hard work put in by the many firefighters that have been working so hard on the Pole Creek and Bald Mountain fires. They have done all they can to save our mountains, homes, animals, and possessions and we are grateful and appreciative. We are not alone either, many schools throughout Nebo school district have also done this because it has affected everyone within Nebo School District.

Chinese Civilizations

Submitted by susan.bird on

For the last two weeks, we have been learning about Chinese Civilization in our classroom. We learned about the dynamic geography of China and how that affected the way people lived anciently as well as how it led to the Silk Road. Three major philosophies were studied; Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism along with their impact on the different dynasties. Four major dynasties were studied; Shang, Zhou, Qin, and Han and we learned about their leaders and contributions to the modern world.
