Three Little Pigs STEM Project

Submitted by susan.bird on Wed, 10/10/2018 - 08:10

This week we did a STEM activity in the first grade. After reading "The Three Little Pigs" we built homes for our piglets using only "dot" candy and toothpicks. We then tested them against the huff and puff of the wolf! (blow dryer). First, they made a plan of how to build, then we tested and went back to the drawing board to make our designs even stronger. Finally, we built once more! ALL their houses withstood the blow dryer by the end! Woo hoo!

Art with Mrs. Palmer

Submitted by susan.bird on Tue, 10/09/2018 - 15:19

Mrs. Ramos' is class is learning about comparing and contrasting with our reading.  So, Mrs. Palmer (our GAINS visual art specialist) taught us how to compare and contrast warm and cool colors.   The students had a great time, and their own art really helped solidify the concept.

Haunted House Projects

Submitted by susan.bird on Thu, 10/04/2018 - 11:59

This is a huge project about following detailed verbal directions. The houses start out as paper, are copied onto pieces of card stock, cut out, and then assembled in class. Our haunted house village this year was called Haunted Hills. Then we (Mrs. Bird and myself) spray paint them out behind the school during planning time. After they dry, we have a class party where we decorate them--in record time--while listening to Halloween music.

Second Grade Learns Colors

Submitted by susan.bird on Wed, 10/03/2018 - 11:43

Second grade students have been learning about colors.  They know that the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue.  They know that you can mix the primary colors and make secondary colors. The secondary colors are orange, green, and purple.  In class all students made a Primary Colors Quilt as well as mixing Play-Doh to make a secondary color wheel. Probably the most fun was learning how to play a Primary Color song and the "C" scale on Glockenspiels.  Come check out our 2nd grade hall to see their artwork.

Fifth Graders Practice Multiplication

Submitted by susan.bird on Fri, 09/28/2018 - 11:25

Miss Bird’s fifth grade class is working hard to learn the “magic” way to multiply.  In fourth grade the students learn different methods, like partial products and the open area model.  This year the students are learning the standard algorithm and practicing like crazy. These students struggled at first, because they were used to their fourth grade ways, but they picked it up quick and are doing amazing.

Spelling Practice

Ms. White's class is working hard on their spelling.  They love to practice using white board markers on their desks.  They are sorting their words using the vowel combinations o, oa, and ow.  Great job, third graders.
