Kindergarten learns about Native Americans

Submitted by susan.bird on

Kindergarteners had a blast learning about Native Americans.  They made their own beads, ground corn, ate cornbread, shot bows and arrows.   This is one of their favorite days.

Celebrations in Mrs. Graves Class

Submitted by susan.bird on

Mrs. Graves, class celebrated before the Thanksgiving break. First, the students had a blast Playing Turkey Charades to get prepared for all of the turkey and festivities!

They had a turkey gobbling contest. Caroline was our officially turkey gobbler award winner. We did our voting “The Voice” style.

And finally, on Tuesday they had to say goodbye to Mrs. Bird. She was our much loved student teacher, Mrs. Bird’s, last day. We will miss her like crazy!  We wish her the best of luck and know that wherever she lands, she will be an amazing teacher! Good luck, Mrs. Bird.

Symbols of America

Submitted by susan.bird on

In Social Studies, the fifth graders have been learning about the Constitution and the symbols of America.  We decided to combine the two and create an art project. With the help from our GAINS art specialist, Mrs. Christine Palmer, we took a copy of the Constitution and drew a symbol as a background.  Some of the symbols that we talked about were the Statue of Liberty, the American Flag, Uncle Sam, the Bald Eagle, and the Liberty Bell. The student sketched out the symbol of their choice then they used a sharpie to outline their shape.

Fourth Grade Totems

Submitted by susan.bird on

During this week of celebration 4th graders continue to learn more about the Native Americans. We spent some time with GAINS specialist, Christine Palmer, learning about totem poles in the Pacific Northwest. Students spent time researching some of the sacred and symbolic carvings found on these wooden masterpieces. Based on their research they then chose and created their own totem pole to represented their family.
